A few tips on best way to utilize your self storage space

We're here to help as much as we can and have several tips to make your storage experience a little easier

Perhaps one of the classic mistakes, make sure you pack similar items together and label them accordingly so items are easier to retrieve when needed

Lining the walls as you’re packing your storage unit is one of the best ways to maximize self storage space

Line the walls but also place heavier items / pieces of furniture with flat surfaces on the floor, and then stack lighter items as high as you can towards the ceiling

Disassemble any bulky items that are easy to pull apart, a bed frame is a classic example of something that takes up far less space in pieces than it does if kept whole

For those who are leasing larger units, consider creating ‘aisles’ of your items so you can easily move through you unit to access items. The last thing you want is to be climbing over things to access something at the rear of your unit!

Using older boxes isn’t recommended, particularly if you’re storing long-term as they can easily fall apart or worse make it easier for insects to get inside

It’s not difficult for something to slip while you’re moving items in & out of storage, consider bubble-wrapping more fragile items to protect against scratches / breakages

As well as bubble wrapping your fragile items, make sure they stand vertically. Mirrors or artwork lying flat can either have things fall on them and can be easily broken. Plus they take up a lot less space if standing on their side.

How about the things that are important NOT to do

There are several things to avoid when using self storage and in some cases are just dangerous

Overfilling boxes can lead to them falling apart or being too heavy and difficult to move

Similar to not overfilling, boxes of books get very heavy very quick. Pack books in smaller boxes to make them easier to move

Batteries left inside electronics will still drain and worse can corrode the terminals inside the battery compartment

Make sure if machinery is kept in storage that fuel is emptied first

A classic mistake, don’t shut doors on appliances this will lead to bad smells and in some cases mold build up

Storing hazardous items is a risk to the safety of the entire facility and strictly forbidden

Keeping animals in self storage is also strictly forbidden and can be considered breaking the law

Perhaps one of the most obvious, if it’s illegal in anyway , we don’t want it in our facility !
